Many candies have been renamed because of various reasons. Candy corn used to be called Chicken Feet because corn used to taste pretty bad. Before World War One corn was not eaten much because it was coarse and cheap so Americans fed it to their chickens. Another example is Sugar Daddies. Sugar Daddies used to be called Papa Suckers. In 1932 they changed the name from Papa Sucker to Sugar Daddy. There are also so many stories on how candys were named. Milky Ways were not named after our galaxy they were named after a popular malted milkshake in the early 1920s. The famous M&Ms were named after the creator Forest Mars and William Murrie. Snickers candy was a special name to the family. It was named after the family’s favorite horse.

The Hershey’s Chocolate Factory makes many products and has a lot of History. In 1894 Milton S. Hershey founded the Hershey Chocolate Company. Their headquarters are in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The town was voted to be called “Hershey Koko” in 1904 but the post office rejected it so they named it Hershey, PA. Hershey’s Chocolate Company is the largest chocolate company in North American. In 1907, Hershey Kisses were made. Many more Hershey products have been created and are being created to this day. Hershey’s Chocolate Company was a big success.

There are some interesting facts about candy having to do with numbers. Crazy right?? If the candy corn brand Branch’s laid out all the candy corn it sells a year it would wrap around the earth 4.25 times. Have you ever tried seeing how many times it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?? Well engineering students in Perdu invented a licking machine to test this. On average it takes 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. NECCO machines crank out about 750,000,000  candy buttons a year!

Extra Fun Facts:

  • Cotton Candy was invented by a dentist
  • If you cut a Crunch bar to say inch it measures exactly 1 inch!
  • M&M’s could cause cancer (Rare!)
